ALPPIKERHO INFORMATION

Suomen Alppikerho:

Suomen Alppikerho (Finnish Alpine Club), founded in 1962, is Finland’s first and oldest climbing club, which operates mainly in the capital region. The club does not have its own home climbing gym, but club members climb in the capital region's climbing gyms at a reduced price with club shifts. The club also has the only Drytooling tower in southern Finland (“Draikkatorni” in Paloheinä, Helsinki), where members can train. Alppikerho organizes club evenings, climbing events, courses and workshops for its members and hosts most of the climbing cragsin the capital region. Alppikerho currently has more than 500 members, which makes the club one of the largest climbing clubs in Finland.

The club's name stems from the early days of Finnish mountaineering, when the club's founder Matti A. Jokinen and his friends started training for alpine climbing in Finland. The club's activities have expanded over the decades, and today there are members who enjoy bouldering, cross-country skiing, and mountain hiking.

The main goal of Alppikerho's activities is to promote safe and versatile climbing, both in summer and winter. Today, Alppikerho's activities include not only climbing but also a variety of other mountain and outdoor sports. Alppikerho's focus areas are the development of access and nearby activities (e.g. through the maintenance of climbing crags, the development of the drytooling tower in Paloheinä and other various events) and the support of junior ice climbing competitors together with the Suomen Kiipeilyliitto ry (Finnish Climbing Federation).

The activities of the Alppikerho are managed and coordinated by the board of the club together with the club officials.
